To the best of our knowledge, Kontsevich and Tyler (2004) were the first to investigate whether Mona Lisa is also smiling with her eyes. They concluded that the impression one may have of Mona Lisa smiling also with her eyes is due to the mouth region: the eyes appear to be smiling only because her lips are smiling.
