In practical terms, you get 1.33 times as much width as height. Imagine taking a picture with a 4:3 camera which you hold horizontally: you'll fit 1.33 times more into the frame from the left to the right edge of the frame than from the top to the bottom. The equivalent ratio is therefore 1.33:1.
