Why do people in old photos have such good skin?

Skin blemishes in portraits were retouched, either by scraping the negative film emulsion to make it print darker, or by painting over to make it print lighter. This was necessary because, until about 100 years ago, film was orthochromatic- that is, it was not sensitive to red.
