In the olden days the 4–4–2 formation up top relied on the presence of 2 strikers playing off of one another. Nowadays, it's evident that you really only need one center-forward because the midfielders and 2 wingers provide enough support without compromising numbers at the back. Simply put, the 4–4–2 is outdated.
