The 3-way or pan-and-tilt head is the most traditional of tripod heads. It features three control arms extending from the head. Each arm allows adjustment on one axis: vertical, horizontal, and panning. To move the camera in one of those axes, you loosen the arm, position the camera, and then tighten the arm.
