Basketball players, traditionally, had to have jersey numbers which only used the digits from 1 through 5 (plus zero), so that the ref could signal fouls to the scorekeeper using only two hands. In the US, there are no standard hand signals to show numbers from 6–9 using just one hand, so players had that limitation.
