What is the sharpest f-stop for a lens?

Most lenses are a bit soft wide open, get sharper when stopped down by 1 or 2 stops, and stay sharp until they get up to f/16 or so when diffraction starts to kick in. f/8 to f/11 are almost always safe choices on pretty much every lens - it may not be that lens's absolute maximum sharpness but it's not far from it.
