400mm / 50mm = 8x magnification. On crop sensor cameras things are a bit different. Nikon DX has a crop factor of 1.5x so the 400mm lens appears as a 600mm lens which gives a 12x magnification factor, we could do the same calculation using the 8x value from the full-frame calculation, as in 8xX 1.5 = 12.
