Backboards were generally made of cardboard. Occasionally hardwood, wood laminates, fabric or wire mesh screening were employed. Developments in the paper and plastics industries have widened the range of materials suitable for backing boards. Lightweight, large scale boards tend to be either paper based or plastic.
