Ideally you'll use something wide (10-20mm) with a large aperture, since you'll want to keep your exposures relatively short (depending on how fast the northern lights are moving something around 10-15 seconds). Use manual mode and set the iso to an adequate number (most likely 3200-6400 for your camera).
