If you do have to shoot in the dark at f4 with a short exposure, you should shoot RAW and try AI noise reduction. Using auto ISO in S mode, will let you see how dark the scene was. Provided you are only interested in detail in the lighter parts of the scene, you should be fine up to ISO 2000.
