One way to move the flash off-camera is to mount it on a light stand or a stick. A monopod with an umbrella adapter works well. Using this will let you add a small softbox or umbrella to soften the light some what for when you are doing portraits. Lots about doing this on David Hobby's Strobist blog - see Lighting 101.
