f number in photography is the ratio between the lens focal lenght and the nominal diaphragm diameter. It it a pure number (no unit) as it is the ratio between two lenghts. For example f/1.7 with a focal lenght of 50mm means you have a diaphragm diameter of 50 mm / 1,7 = 29,4 mm.
