What is the difference between 4:3 and 16:9 camera settings?

Something I'll add here is that 16:9 is the same width as 4:3, just with the top and bottom cut off. It's not wider, but shorter. This means that 4:3 captures more image, which can be cropped later to 16:9 to get the same result as if you filmed in 16:9.
